Convergence and integration

“Convergence” and “integration” are frequently recurring buzzwords in any debate on the future of the Internet. They refer to the merging of telecommunications, media and information technologies. This integration process is taking place before our eyes – as seen in new products and services like Internet TV and Internet telephony (Voice over IP). The goal of all convergence technologies is simply to provide media services with greater diversity and convenience. None of this would be possible without broadband technology.

Packages currently offered by providers in the market combine broadband Internet access, conventional and/or broadband telephone services and broadband entertainment such as IPTV (triple play), sometimes also including mobile telephony (quadruple play). This chapter looks at the present and future implications of this.

Core statements

  • The next few years will see a significant rise in user demand for combined broadband Internet offerings such as quadruple play or triple play.
  • The ability to offer a combination of fixed and mobile broadband infrastructure will become an increasingly important success factor for broadband Internet providers.
  • Quality and service leadership will be important competitive distinguishing marks for broadband Internet providers.
  • Integrated mobile “Internet access from anywhere” plus related applications will be important drivers for the penetration of quadruple-play services, and will be a major drawing card for the consumer.
